The Department of Environmental Science, Gauhati University, first established as an Environmental Research Unit in 1978, was later on raised to the status of an academic department in November 1980 for teaching and research in environmental meteorology, environmental geophysics and environmental pollution. This Department was the first department of higher learning in the North-Eastern Region where teaching and research in this multidisciplinary subject has been conducted since its inception.
The Department has at the core of its mission an overriding concern to provide quality higher education in the area of Environmental Science catering to the needs of the North Eastern Region in general and the state of Assam in particular. Towards realization of this dream, the Department has been striving for the last 35 years by engaging itself in teaching, research as well as extension activities to this multidisciplinary subject.
